Downtown Flowers

Flowers for Valentine's Day

Every February brings that special day and that special someone you want to sweep off their feet. But, on Valentine's Day it's easy to do too little or go over the top. To avoid some of the hassle and hard decisions that come with planning a beautiful Valentine's Day for your sweet, DLA spoke with downtown florists to get their opinion on flowers for the big day.

Abloom

1451 O St #100 | (402) 435-6937

Abloom is a fresh flower only floral shop with edgy, out of the norm, spin on arrangements. Abloom expresses creativity in many forms, but values quality and fresh flowers above all else. When asked how Valentine's Day preperations were going, DLA was answered with a peppy: "We like to Henry Ford our way through the hoilday". This was, of course, referencing the assembly line style of snipping wire and other materials necessary for making every type of arrangement.

Q & A with Abloom

1. What is your favorite arrangement to make and why?

My favorite creations are when the client gives me a figure to work with and gives me full creative freedom. I can work with any budget and have put together some great pieces.

2. What is your favorite event to arrange for?

I did a wedding inside Morrill Hall. They were both zooligists and I made some grass centerpieces with their very own animal statues in the middle. It was right in the front hall next to the Mastadons and very beautiful.

3. Why do you like having your business downtown?

Downtown is interesting! Our storefront is right on O Street and when we are working late on the weekends for holidays you see a lot of interesting people. It's the best people watching ever. It's sort of like reverse window shopping.

4. What is the most unusual circumstance someone has ordered flowers for?

We have had edible paintings and oddities added to the floral arrangements, but one of the strangest things that sticks with me is a particular order where the client wished to be personally delivered along with a basket of apples as part of the arrangement. We had to decline the offer due to a conflict with our policies, but they took a cab to the delivery destination.

5. What is the biggest mistake with flowers on Valentine's Day?

Buying roses for one. Secondly, leaving them out too long or not paying attention to water levels.

6. If Miley Cyrus were a flower what type would she be and why?

Something bizzare and wierd. Maybe a naughty anthurium or a bright orange carnation.

Q & A with Fleur

1. What is your favorite arrangement to make and why?

All arrangements are different so all are unique. I spend a lot of time with each until I am happy with them so it's impossible for me to pick just one. I love doing both corporate arrangements as well as individual.

2. What is your favorite event to arrange for?

Small events, private parties. I have also done a lot of arrangements for restaurants downtown including The Oven, Bread & Cup and Blue Sushi. It isn't about the events, it's about delivering quality and beautiful design to my clients.

3. Why do you like having your business downtown?

I have been working downtown for 13 years, 9 in my current office. It has been a delight to watch Lincoln morph into what it is today. I loved seeing the West Haymarket develop from down the street. We love being around culture, youth, growth and being able to walk to shops and not have to drive. Energy is found everywhere.

4. What is the most unusual circumstance someone has ordered flowers for?

There isn't any one thing that I can think of. There have been a lot of orders and I have spent a lot of time on them all.

5. What is the biggest mistake with flowers on Valentine's Day?

Everyone orders roses. There are so many beautiful flowers to get instead.

6. If Miley Cyrus were a flower what type would she be and why?

I would suggest an orchid! Unique and colorful.

One that is going to make someone smile! Something just picked for that "from the garden" look. Fun, full, beautiful and romantic.

2. What is your favorite event to arrange for?

All celebrations of life. I really like ones where the logistics are extra challenging. For example, the roof of the Saint Regis hotel in NYC provided unique obstacles.

3. Why do you like having your business downtown?

We have been in downtown for 31 years this Valentine's Day! Downtown is our neighborhood! We love being here!
